Did you know...

     A class action lawsuit was filed against a mortgage bank "on behalf" of 300,000 unknowing bank customers. The lawyers who filed the suit won $8 million in fees, which were deducted from the accounts of the bank's customers. They lawyers got $8 million, and the customers were each forced to pay $89.14 for lawyers they never knew they hired.

     The cost of lawsuits in the U.S. amounts to a "lawsuit tax" of $1,200 for every man, woman and child in America. This is the cost added to the price of goods and services that you pay for as a result of litigation, settlements and liability insurance.

     There are several independent and locally-based organizations in California that are actively engaged in this issue and dedicated to stopping this abuse. Known as Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse (CALA), these groups together represent 30,000 Californians who are tired of paying for lawsuit abuse. Each CALA is a separate, nonprofit, grassroots, public education organization governed by a volunteer board of directors.

The problem of class action abuse has become so severe that the CALA groups in California have banded together to put pressure on elected officials to enact common sense reforms that will restore sanity to the justice system, protect consumers' rights, and stop the outrageous abuse.
